October 10, 2017 Toronto, Ontario Federal Economic Development Agency for
Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario)
Spadina-Fort York and OCAD University will benefit from a newly refurbished historic property, the George Reid House, as result of a $1,000,000 investment from the Government of Canada.
The funding was announced today by Adam Vaughan, Member of Parliament for Spadina-Fort York, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).
George Reid House is the original 1921 campus building of the Ontario College of Art and the first purpose-build structure in Canada dedicated exclusively to the education of art and design. The refurbishment includes the creation of new event and meeting spaces and restoration of the portico which will be renamed the Canada 150 Portico. The project will restore the building to its 1921 splendour and modernize its facilities for the 21st century. The project is a celebration of history and heritage, as well as a look toward the future.
This investment is being allocated under the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program, a $300-million fund that was established to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through investments in the community spaces that bring Canadians together. Of that amount, FedDev Ontario is delivering funding of up to $88.8 million across southern Ontario.
“This investment is a community-building project to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. And there’s no better way to mark this milestone than to celebrate the places that bring us together—the places that allow us to stay fit, unwind or connect with our friends and neighbours. That’s how we establish the bonds of common understanding and friendship in a country where people come from every corner of the world. The values of openness, diversity and inclusion that define all Canadians are forged in our community spaces.”
- The Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario
“Having played a role in initiating the revitalization of Grange Park, it gives me enormous pleasure to announce funding for the restoration of George Reid House as part of our government’s celebration of Canada 150 and support for OCAD University. I am proud to see my community and Toronto benefit from this program.”
- Adam Vaughan, M.P. for Spadina-Fort York
“OCAD University’s immense social, cultural, economic and city-building impact has a long history. Through this generous funding, the refurbishment of the George Reid House ensures a bright future for this historic building by modernizing the interior facilities and re-establishing it as a significant university and community asset.”
- Sara Diamond, President and Vice-Chancellor, OCAD University
